As health-care professionals, this is what we have trained for. People often ask why we would choose to care for such high-risk patients. For many of us, that is why we chose this occupation — to care for people in need. Every person involved in the treatment of these two patients volunteered for the assignment. At least two nurses canceled vacations to be a part of this team. They derive satisfaction from knowing that, after years of preparing for this type of case, they are able to help, to comfort and to do it safely. The gratitude they receive from the patients’ families drives their efforts.

As human beings, we all hope that if we were in need of superior health care, our country and its top doctors would help us get better. We can either let our actions be guided by misunderstandings, fear and self-interest, or we can lead by knowledge, science and compassion. We can fear, or we can care.

— Susan Mitchell Grant, RN, head nurse at Emory Healthcare, from I’m the head nurse at Emory. This is why we wanted to bring the Ebola patients to the U.S.

It’s gratifying to be reminded that smart, decent human beings are still in charge of some important things.

A rant, not a GIF

Women Against Feminism makes me so furious that I don’t know how to respond to it. I certainly appreciate and applaud the efforts of Confused Cats Against Feminism in that regard, but somehow it doesn’t go far enough for my taste. Maybe I’m just tired of cats. Regardless, I still can’t think of a better idea.

Since I’m unable to process my outrage into anything resembling constructive satire or parody as of yet, I’ll just say something painfully, ridiculously obvious instead:

Men and women should have equal rights and opportunities.

This is not a radical concept, and yet apparently it is.

Thanks to the magic of technology, it’s literally effortless to look up the definition of “feminism” and learn about it. It is literally effortless to educate oneself about gender equality. Google and Wikipedia are things that people know about, and people have written some things about this topic over the years.

So, no. In 2014, if you’re still confused about what Feminism is, you’re deliberately not learning. You’re deliberately choosing to remain uneducated and oblivious. You are actively choosing to be an asshole. I can’t bring myself to call this “confusion.” It’s more like “intellectual dishonesty” or “fucking mindless willful stupidity” to me.
