Emergency Broadcast Network — Psychoactive Drugs

It was 1992, and I had never seen or heard anything like EBN. They were responsible for my first introduction to what’s possible when you chop up copyrighted audio and video in an effort to make something completely new. It’s amazing to think about how much a “remix culture” influences internet content today, in light of the fact that these guys were perfecting their craft while the first web browser was still being developed.

The video above is the opening to their VHS release, Commercial Entertainment Product. This was a piece of work, especially considering the state of the art of video editing in ‘92. PROTIP: Watch this 30-minute tape once and you had fulfilled your total television intake requirements for a full week.
