Isn’t it weird how we don’t seem to desire increased choice and competition with our internet services? Think about the number of times you’ve read (or said) something like, “just what we need, yet another social network.” Or chat service, or social news aggregator, or anything…

I’m certainly guilty of this thinking, yet I’ve never had the same reaction to new dvd players, shoes, cars, books, movies, iPods, or toasters. Is it because our consumer-oriented culture expects — nay, demands — that we have unlimited choice for regular packaged goods or traditional services, while we can’t wrap our lizard brains around the act of simply ignoring shit on the internet we don’t care about?

Or put another way: If you’re happy with your GTalk, MSN, AIM, Yahoo, Jabber, Skype, or MySpace Chat, then you really don’t have to use Facebook Chat.
